Program Note:
The idea for High Tide came from a realization I had one night while I couldn’t fall asleep: I realized that strong feelings and emotions often come in waves, similar to how sound functions. I started thinking a lot about the different ways waves can come about in music, such as the actual waveforms that make up sound, dynamic swells, and structural waves. Keeping all of these thoughts in mind, I went about writing the piece. It begins with a subdued and gentle beginning until dissonant ripples are introduced into the placid surface. The music continues to struggle until the climax, where the tides synchronize and we come to a resolution. After that, the music slowly fades away, ending as it began.
